Tools for Molecular Biologists

Over the years I have found a few really cool tools that has made my life as a researcher a bit easier. I am by no means advertising these tools but rather just sharing them for you to consider for your own purposes. Most of the tools (except CLC software) provide educational access so if you use your university linked email adres you should get free access to the pro versions.

https://benchling.com/This is one of my favourite tools. Its a web based platform that provides various easy to use utilities that will make your life easier and speed up your day-to-day tasks. It provides quite a decent platform for sequence analysis, editing and visualisation. furthermore you can use it as a online lab book (my favourite feature), to write protocols, manage lab resources (like freeze culture boxes) and create work groups to collaborate.

Qiagen provides various tools aimed and DNA/protein sequences. Their sequence viewer is  a free tool (after some registration steps etc.) and provides a powerful set of tools. They commercial tools like the CLC Main Workbench require a license and is much more powerful in terms of the repertoire of tools built in.

Mendeley is a reference manager. This is my favourite of the ones out there, especially because it is free. It allows you to organise all your reference material in one place and make notes or highlight sections. The MS Word plugin allows you to link to Mendeley and do in-text referencing. This makes writing so easy and at the end it will setup the reference list according to your specified style.

This is an alternative tools for creating presentations. If you are tired of doing same old boring Powerpoint I encourage you to try Prezi. Its a great way to stand out from the crowd.
